Sexual Exploitation

Sexual Exploitation

The term "sexual exploitation" means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. (UN Secretary-General's Bulletin on protection from sexual exploitation and abuse. (PSEA) (ST/SGB/2003/13)

Sexual exploitation is an increasingly high profile issue that affects children and young people of all backgrounds and from all communities, right across the UK.  Children are most vulnerable to sexual exploitation between the ages of 13 and 15, but younger victims are being targeted all the time.  In one month alone, Barnardo's services worked with 126 children aged 10-13 who had been affected.
