Health Impact Assessment and Environmental Public Health

Health Impact Assessment and Environmental Public Health

Environmental public health is the discipline of identifying, assessing and managing risks linked to environmental hazards that can adversely affect individual and population health. Work in this field attempts to prevent or minimise hazardous exposures and impacts and contribute to healthy, fair and sustainable environments.

HIA can be a useful tool for those working in environmental public health to understand the impact of developments and policies on the wider determinants of health. HIA can be integrated within Sustainability Appraisals (SA), Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to provide a framework for assessing impact on “human health” and “population health”.

The Wales Health Impact Assessment Support Unit works closely with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Cymru, Public Health Wales’ Health Protection Team and Public Health England’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (Wales) to support the use of HIA in Environmental Public Health. WHIASU runs regular training sessions for Environmental Health Officers in partnership with the CIEH. Contact WHIASU for more information.
